Today, The Cemala Foundation let us know that they awarded ConvergeSouth a 2008 grant for the conference. This generous grant will enable us to bring in nationally-recognized speakers and offset costs for food and our small administration expenses. Many thanks to everyone at The Cemala Foundation for their gracious support of this community-based conference.

Meet Tina, the PR volunteer for ConvergeSouth. Expect to see some press releases (in all sorts of media) from Tina, whose blog is here. You have to appreciate a blogger who devotes an entire post to the difference between “losing” and “loosing.”

Guess who couldn’t get enough banana pudding and is re-converging in Greensboro in 2008? Robert Scoble is going to lead part of the Video Walking Tour, a new 2008 ConvergeSouth afternoon’s experience.
Learn more about the Video Walking Tour here.

ConvergeSouth 2008 blog is online. Get the feed. The whole Web site will be here and should launch within a week or two.
Needs some attention from a very talented WordPress/CSS guru. Hmmm, know anyone?
Needs a blogmaven. Much less skill required.

Thanks to a private emailer who can out himself if he chooses, we have a theme for ConvergeSouth 2008 and although a I can foretell those Mac users who will disdain it (some of my best friends…) and I’m giving serious thought to buying a Macbook when the Apple store opens here in Greensboro, his suggestions are a universally-understood set of terms. (Listen for the drumroll.) Imagine the graphic ripping off we can do!
Start –> Programs (blogging platforms, video sharing…)
Start –> Connect (community building, social networks…)
Start –> Help and Support (how-to sessions, blogging 101 and 102…)
I think I like it. I know I like it. What I like even more is that it’s community suggested.
Updatingly, we have a brand-new ConvergeSouth event to announce soon, some sponsors signed on (checks are in the mail), grant requests filed, lots of coordinating with BlogHer, panelists and presenters to nail down (many “tentatives” in the inbox) and — hey, Hogg! are you up for another BBQ for a few hundred folks at your place this year?

Hoping for no fog in Toronto this year, Anil Dash will be at ConvergeSouth 2008.
Not too shabby!

Many people expressed an interest in choosing presenters for ConvergeSouth. This is your opportunity. We are looking for presenters of diverse background and experiences in these particular areas:
- Business
- Blog
- Video
- Social Networking
- Law
- Gaming
How to suggest: Leave a name with contact information in comments or email it directly to me. Strange as it may sound, I don’t know everyone who has an online presence, so some background on their expertise will be a plus. Names without any contact info will probably be ignored because there’s only so many hours in a day.
I’d appreciate your comments as to why this person would be a great CS choice. You probably know something we don’t and that’s always a big help.
NB: The site WILL launch this weekend, mistakes and all. We have an online method for you to suggest additional breakout presentations and nominate yourself to lead one. We have not yet turned anyone down and would do so only for space reasons (limited number of Internet-ready rooms at A&T).

ConvergeSouth 2008 needs a Blogmaster/mistress. It’s a behind-the-keyboard job; probably some pasting and a little link checking. The pay is terrible but the rewards are significant. Estimated time needed from your life: less than 1 hour per week.
Application process: just ask and it could be yours (in comments or by email).

Grab your logo. The planning has already started. We need a Web badge; anyone here a good Web badger?
Tentative dates: Thursday afternoon, October 16 (the new piece), October 17, October 18, 2008.

ConvergeSouth Jobs - Yours for the Volunteering
Contact info: admin@convergesouth.com
(Volunteer and get your very own email address!)
Process:
Read the jobs available for ConvergeSouth 2008 (below). Decide which one you want to do. Make sure the job meshes with your talents and patience and then commit to it. When you are ready to commit to the whole thing with a “no matter what” caveat, please let me know and the job is yours. (OK, not “no matter WHAT,” but you get the idea.)
Jobs marked with $$ mean that you might have to put out some of your own money and be repaid by ConvergeSouth, usually 2-4 weeks after we make the check request.
Team Rule
No one speaks for the conference alone. No one commits money (outside your budget) or to a speaker without team approval. We don’t trash each other in blogs (or anywhere else) because we might disagree; instead, we embrace compromise where appropriate.
